Choosing the warmest jacket is not just about thickness. Warmth comes from insulation type, how much of it is used, how well it is protected from wind and rain, and how the jacket is designed to seal heat in. At Fjern, we design jackets for very different conditions, from fast moving mountain days to deep winter cold. This guide explains which of our jackets are the warmest, why they are warm, and when each one makes sense.
How jacket warmth actually works
Before naming the warmest option, it helps to understand what creates warmth.
Insulation type
Down offers the highest warmth for its weight. Higher fill power and more down equals more heat. Synthetic insulation is slightly less warm but performs better when damp.
Insulation amount
Fill power matters, but so does how much insulation is used. A jacket with more grams of insulation will usually feel warmer.
Weather protection
Wind and rain strip heat fast. A waterproof outer can make a jacket feel much warmer in real world conditions.
Fit and sealing
Hoods, high collars, cuffs, and hems all help trap warmth close to your body.
The warmest Fjern jackets overall
Aska Waterproof Down Jacket
Warmest all round
The Aska is the warmest Fjern jacket currently available. It combines high quality down with full waterproof protection, making it extremely effective in cold, wet winter weather.
It uses 700 fill power hydrophobic down with a premium 95 to 5 down to feather ratio and a very high down fill weight. The waterproof shell blocks wind and rain, while heat sealed baffles prevent cold spots. The result is a jacket that stays warm even when conditions are poor.
Best for winter hiking, cold weather travel, static use, and long days outdoors in mixed conditions.
Eldfjall Waterproof Down Jacket
Maximum warmth with a technical feel
The Eldfjall is very close to the Aska in warmth and is the heaviest insulated jacket in the range. It uses a large amount of down in the body and sleeves, with synthetic insulation in high moisture areas like the hood and shoulders.
Its fully waterproof shell and high insulation weight make it extremely warm and dependable in harsh weather. It feels more technical and robust, with a slightly heavier build.
Best for cold, wet mountain conditions, winter hillwalking, and situations where warmth matters more than pack size.
Arktis III Down Hooded Jacket
Warmest non waterproof down jacket
The Arktis III is the warmest dry weather down jacket in the Fjern range. It uses 750 fill power down and a generous fill weight, giving excellent warmth without a waterproof shell.
It is lighter and more packable than the waterproof down jackets, but still very warm in cold and dry conditions. Wind protection is good, but rain protection is limited.
Best for cold dry climates, winter layering, and static warmth at camp or on rest stops.
Aktiv II Down Hooded Jacket
Warmth with lower weight
The Aktiv II is slightly lighter and less warm than the Arktis, but still very capable in cold conditions. It uses 700 fill power down and a lower fill weight, focusing on balance rather than maximum insulation.
It is easier to pack, easier to layer, and better suited to active use where overheating can be an issue.
Best for cold but active days, fast hiking, and lightweight winter trips.
Jackets that rely on layering for warmth
Breen II Active Jacket
Warmth while moving
The Breen II is not designed to be the warmest jacket on its own. It uses lightweight synthetic insulation and breathable fleece panels to regulate temperature during movement.
It works best as an outer layer in cold and dry conditions or as a mid layer under a shell. It stays warm when active but is not intended for long stops in freezing weather.
Orkan II Waterproof Shell Jacket
No insulation, but critical for warmth
The Orkan II has no insulation, but it plays an important role in warmth. By blocking wind and rain, it allows your insulating layers underneath to work properly.
Paired with a down or synthetic jacket, it can significantly increase overall warmth in exposed conditions.

Final summary
The warmest Fjern jacket depends on how and where you use it. For cold and wet conditions, a waterproof down jacket offers the most reliable warmth. For cold and dry environments, a high fill power down jacket delivers excellent insulation with less weight. For high output activity, breathable insulation and smart layering matter more than maximum loft.
We will continue to develop new jackets, so this guide may become outdated as the range grows. The principles stay the same. Insulation quality, insulation quantity, and protection from the elements are what keep you warm.
