I've had various brands of softshell pants over the years, Mountain Equipment, Montane, TNF etc and these for me are much better. You can feel the quality of the materials, zips, fasteners and generous pockets and not a single loose thread. Got these off Sportpursuit on a promotion for a bargain £43, wish I'd bought two pairs now. Great to support a UK company.

I bought these for a trip to Norway and they have continued to impress, they are super soft and comfortable and even after wading in knee deep snow they remained dry, the popper studs are secure although I'd watch for putting smaller stuff in the rear pocket as there are gaps but that's the only issue I could find. I would definitely recommend these to anyone who enjoys walking or is going to a cold area.

Your thought your crispy montane trousers were a soft shell. Think again! These are so soft( for a windproof trouser), that you will think you are wearing your headmistress's silk pyjamas.

Always had problems with hiking trousers as I have large thighs and calfs so struggle to get trousers to fit where they don't look silly on my waist.
Overall highly recommend these trousers for all seasons except summer as they are nice and warm and comfy for hiking in the Scottish Highlands and going up Munro's. Always great for taking the dog out in all weathers.
